Translation is the written reproduction of a text in a foreign language, whereas interpreting involves only the spoken word.
The activity of translation covers the rendering of a fixed, written text into another language. A successful translation can be measured according to the degree to which it is faithful to the original whilst remaining legible and understandable. Ideally, the translator should attempt to reproduce exactly the mode of expression in the target language which a native speaker of that language would use in the respective communication situation. Translation always involves an interpretation of the text (not in the sense of the activity of interpreting, but in the sense of extracting the sense of the text). In this respect the accent should be laid on transmitting what the author is really trying to convey, which may not be identical with the superficial words of the text as they stand.

The activity of interpreting involves a subject which ‘exists’, so to speak, exactly for the length of time required for its expression.
