Mechatronics
Mechatronics represents the fusion of the disciplines mechanics, electronics and software engineering within a given technological system.
The term ‘mechatronics’ was first used in the field of fine mechanics and is now used to represent the interplay between mechanical, electronic and information technological constituents of a system. It was coined in Japan in 1969.
The definition given in the ‘Kraftfahrttechnisches Taschenbuch’ (a book on motor transport technology issued by the Robert Bosch Company, 23rd edition, published by Vieweg in 1999) corresponds with the way the term is currently understood in Germany today: “Mechatronics is an engineering discipline by which the functionality of a technical system is achieved through a the close interaction of mechanical, electronic and software components.”
