The double-checking principle means that each translation is inspected by a person qualified to do so as a means of ensuring the highest quality.
Quality control by means of double-checking. Authors of any kind of text find it difficult to put sufficient distance between themselves and their writing so as to be able to judge it objectively. In this sense the same applies to translators. The double-checking principle makes use of the fact that no two pairs of eyes see exactly the same thing, and for this reason we avail ourselves of the method as a matter of routine. High quality includes, amongst other things, the absence of mistakes, and this can only be guaranteed with the aid of a second, also qualified opinion. The colleague’s appraisal includes a check of formal, linguistic and content related aspects.
Qualified, effective proofreading of translated texts is a matter of great importance to us. This task, especially in the translating context, requires a firm foundation of experience. Generally, the proofreaders and reviewers whom we employ are themselves translators of long standing.
Proofreading entails much more than just ‘having a quick look through’ a text. The proofreader needs to know the background of the text, its purpose and what types of error he or she should concentrate on eliminating. Naturally, any text should be essentially free of factual, stylistic, grammatical and orthographic errors, and this state can only be achieved by experienced proofreaders within a reasonable space of time.
