The Russian language implements the Russian alphabet. (Russian: русский алфавит or русская азбука / in Latin letters: russki alfavit or russkaia asbuka), which is based on the Cyrillic alphabet (Russian: кириллический алфавит or кириллица / in Latin letters cirillicheski alfavit or cyrillic).

Following the last orthographic reform of 1918 the Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. Of these, 10 are used to express vowel sounds: а, е, ё, и, о, у, ы, э, ю and я. The other 23 letters are used for the consonants, whereby ъ and ь are not independent letters in their own right, but serve as indicators for the degree of ‘hardness’ or ‘softness’ (palatalisation) with which the preceding consonant is to be expressed.

Russian is the mother tongue of approximately 145 million people, of whom about 118 million people live in Russia itself.
